Seedpods and Wildflowers – Original

121 x 91cm

Acrylic on stretched canvas ready to hang.

This piece represents the collection of wildflowers and bush seeds on Jagun- Country. Aboriginal people were the world’s first bread makers and bakers. It involved collecting seasonal seeds, grain, legumes, roots or nuts, grinding these into a flour and then adding water to form a dough. Bread making was a labour intensive task and was usually a woman’s job, generally carried out by several women at once. Millstones for grinding seeds into flour have been discovered which date to be over 36 000 years old, which is well ahead of other civilisations, such as the Egyptians, that started baking early on.
