‘Shaping Country III’
91 x 61cm
Acrylic on stretched canvas, ready to hang.
This work represents the Country and for thousands of years and generations Aboriginal people managed, fostered and shaped the land carefully. Aboriginal people worked a complex system of land management and were the first farmers, whose knowledge of managing native plants and animals were sustained for thousands of years. Early European explorers marvelled at the maintained open grassy plains growing on friable, spongy soil. However, these explorers failed to recognise this was not ‘natural,’ but the result of thousands of years of careful management by the land’s traditional custodians. Evidence from artwork, journals and plant life cycles show how Aboriginal communities had a profound impact on caring and shaping the Country.
