Contemporary Aboriginal Artist

Contemporary Australian Art

Contemporary Aboriginal Artist and teacher, Holly Sanders, is a proud Bundjalung woman from the North Coast of New South Wales. She is currently living and working as an artist and teacher on Yuin and Dharawal Countries, on the South Coast of New South Wales. Through her art, she aims to share her stories, culture and Country in a contemporary way.

Holly honors the continuing connection Bundjalung, Yuin and Dharawal people have to the land and acknowledges the stories, traditions and living cultures of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the oldest and longest continuing culture on the planet.

I always look to Country – the land, sky and the sea- and use these images, memories and stories to paint. The stories, colours and patterns of Country at different times of the day and year influence heavily in my art.

Painting keeps my culture strong, it is good for my health and well-being and it takes me back spiritually and historically to who I am. From a young age, I have been painting, my mother is an artist and always encouraged me to draw and paint.. I’m hoping to pass this love of painting onto my own jarjums (children).
