Cullunghutti Aboriginal Child and Family Centre is our local ACCO (Aboriginal Community Controlled Org) who prides itself on being a place of belonging for all children, their families, and the South Coast community. Their centre is dedicated to all elders, past and present, for their valuable knowledge, wisdom, and loving care passed on to Boori’s (children) and their families, as well as the community.

Cullunghutti is a special place for children and families to connect, grow, and learn together, reflecting and strengthening Aboriginal identity within the wider community. It brings together a range of early childhood, health, and family support services to improve education, health, wellbeing, and quality of life for Aboriginal children and families, and helps them learn and grow to become the future leaders of our community. They are a not-for-profit organisation, and self-managed by the local Aboriginal community. 🩵🌿👣
Excited to share my work for the cover of @mrsedga Excited to share my work for the cover of @mrsedgarsclass 2026 teacher planner! This work is a celebration of vibrant Saltwater Country and is a reminder of our connection to the land and sea, our cultural obligations, and the vital role that mangroves and estuaries play in particular.

The circular designs scattered across the artwork represent the many sacred places that dot our coastline, each holding its own story and connection to our ancestors and old people. For saltwater people, this country is more than a place; it is our lifeblood, our old people, our history, and the keeper of our stories.

The meeting place symbols throughout the work symbolise the gatherings that have always taken place on these coastal areas. Connecting us to each other and to the land and ocean Country that sustains us.

The flora patterns and intricate lines represent the mangroves and their root systems. They symbolise resilience, interconnectedness, and the vital role mangroves play in sheltering and nurturing life. Mangroves can be seen as the ‘mothers’ of the sea, providing a safe haven for new life to flourish. This represents protection, nurturing, and the cycle of life and regeneration.

This artwork serves as a reminder of the intrinsic value of these delicate saltwater ecosystems and our ongoing cultural responsibilities to protect them. We sing to the sea, our ceremonies honour its spirits, and we teach our jarjums (children) the importance of listening to Saltwater Country and its whispers. ‘Country and Kin’ - This work features on @mrs ‘Country and Kin’ - This work features on @mrsedgarsclass 2026 teacher planner. The work acknowledges the deep and enduring connections of the oldest continuous living culture in the world. The intricate patterns and symbols represented throughout this work depict the story of interconnectedness – between people, Country and community.

The storylines that flow across the canvas represent the knowledge and wisdom passed down through the generations. These lines carry the stories of our old people, the lore of the land and connection to Country.

Scattered across the artwork are various sized meeting place symbols. These circles signify the importance of community and kinship. They represent areas on Country where knowledge is shared and kinship ties are strengthened.

The straight, intricate lines that weave throughout the composition represent journeys, pathways, and the flow of energy across Country. These lines symbolise the unbroken thread of connection between past, present, and future and emphasise the continuation of culture.

The various symbols used throughout and their intricate relationships within the artwork symbolise the message of connection and interconnectedness – the land, people, knowledge and spirituality.

This artwork serves as a reminder of the profound depth and resilience of our culture, a living heritage that has thrived for millennia, continuously adapting and maintaining its vital connection to Country and Community.

This work represents Banksias on Country, one of m This work represents Banksias on Country, one of my favourite plants, and shares the story of their cultural significance. Banksias symbolise renewal, resilience, and a deep connection to the land, serving as both a source of food and medicine.

More than just a plant, the Banksia is a keeper of stories and a symbol of resilience. Each banksia cone holds the stories of fire, renewal, and the sacred cycle of life. Women, the nurturers and protectors of Lore, hold deep knowledge of the healing properties within every plant, leaf, and flower—wisdom passed down through songlines and shared knowledge. Teaching jarjum (children) the importance of listening to Country, respecting its rhythms, and finding strength in Country. 🌿👣

Gunjull Gibbam- Beautiful Moon- 121 x 76cm acrylic Gunjull Gibbam- Beautiful Moon- 121 x 76cm acrylic on stretched canvas ready to hang - The moon and the stars don’t just light the night sky, but are sources of meaning, stories of Dreaming and Creation, traditions, ancestors, culture and history. Symbolic of life and Country’s cyclical nature, it waxes and wanes signifying change and transformation. Lunar phases are linked to the different tides and incorporated into Saltwater Country knowledge systems. This knowledge informs hunting, fishing and agricultural practices. The stars are seen as a compass, a clock and a seasonal calendar. The moon, a light in the darkness, offers guidance, wisdom and hope. The night sky is a source of knowledge about aspects of life and Lore. When we look to the night sky we look upon the same stars as our ancestors did and find strength in the knowledge that they are looking down on us, always guiding.

‘Shaping Country’ - 102 x 76cm acrylic on stre ‘Shaping Country’ - 102 x 76cm acrylic on stretched canvas ready to hang - This work represents the shaping of Country. For thousands of years and generations First Nations people managed, fostered and shaped the land carefully. A complex system of land management, fire stick farming, aqua and agriculture of managing native flora and fauna were sustained for thousands of years. First Nations people are the first farmers, whose knowledge Early European explorers marvelled at the maintained open grassy plains growing on friable, spongy soil. Evidence from artworks, journals and plant life cycles show how Aboriginal communities had a profound impact on caring and shaping the Country. 🌿👣

Acknowledgement of country

As a proud Bundjalung woman living on Yuin Country, Holly personally acknowledges and pays her respects to Elders of the past and present for their strength, knowledge and leadership.

She acknowledges the traditional owners of the land, waters and sky, who have thrived and lived sustainably with the land we now call Australia for more than 60,000 years.

Holly honours the continuing connection Bundjalung and Yuin people have to the land and acknowledges the stories, traditions and living cultures of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the oldest and longest continuing culture on the planet.
