‘Water is Life’
Artwork Meaning-
Water is of the utmost importance culturally, spiritually and physically for many First Nations people. Saltwater and freshwater sustain us in every way, such as our spiritual relationships, language, song lines, Dreamings, sacred places, customary use and the plants and animals associated with water. Thousands of years of memories and traditions are held in or near water places. Many Dreamings and sacred places are tied to the ocean and our freshwater rivers, waterways and waterholes. Many cultural places such as men’s and women’s business places, like sacred birthing areas, are held near water. First Nations people have a deep responsibility to care and look after water, making sure it is healthy. First Nations people have a complex knowledge base that enabled our survival on one of the driest continents. Water is sacred and we have the knowledge of how it has carefully been managed for thousands of years. We have custodial responsibilities to protect cultural flows in water for our future jarjums (children) and generations.
